CONSTRUCTION
Downtown is always evolving, growing and changing in the physical aspect. With that growth comes construction. Construction zones typically impact vehicular traffic lanes and pedestrian sidewalks. More information is available on specific development projects. For mapped construction information, please check out our map for construction zones.
Church Street (Consumer Energy)
Consumers Energy will be conducting vault work at the corner Michigan Avenune and Church Street beginning on Monday, May 21. There will be minor temporary lane closures and sidewalk closures at this time. Affected property owners have been noticed.
Kalamazoo Ave. & Michigan Ave. Railroad Crossing Improvements
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Grand Elk Railroad will be making railroad crossing improvements on I-94 Business Loop/M-43 (Kalamazoo and Michigan avenues).
Work includes reconstructing the railroad crossing on Kalamazoo Avenue near the intersection of Porter St., and also installing new railroad equipment and making associated road improvements on Michigan Avenue one block east of Pitcher Street. The work is scheduled to begin September 7, 2012 and is expected to be completed by October 5, 2012.
Eastbound traffic will be maintained using lane closures. Westbound traffic will be detoured on Harrison Street, Ransom Street, and Pitcher Street.
This project will improve railroad crossing safety for trains, motorists, and pedestrians, and provide a smoother ride for motorists crossing the tracks on Kalamazoo Avenue. The new gates added to the Michigan Avenue crossing are intended to prevent vehicles from entering the crossing when a train is present. Fore more information on the project, call the Kalamazoo Transportation Service Center at (269) 375-8900 or visit MDOT's website at: www.michigan.gov/mdot
Exchange Place
The City of Kalamazoo has approved temporary closure of Exchange Place from 11:00am to 7:30pm daily from Wednesday, April 25th to Friday, May 4. It is understood that the closure will involve the use of barricades and drums. Also, roadway on Kalamazoo Mall will not be affected during this work. This could affect deliveries during the day. Please schedule them accordingly.
The closure is in place in order to allow new cornice work to be built on the Kalamazoo Building.
